Fact Checking in Coauthor

Available on Coauthor Pro plan and Team plan. Coauthor automatically checks your posts for factual accuracy.

While no AI system is 100% accurate, we’ve found that Coauthor’s built-in fact checking is a useful way to reduce the risk of AI “hallucinations”, avoid unintentional errors, and confidently share accurate, trustworthy information.

Here’s an overview:

Sharing accurate information builds credibility and trust with your audience.

AI tools can occasionally “hallucinate” incorrect or outdated information and present it as fact.

In addition, interesting posts you’ve fed into Coauthor may have incorrect or debunked information.

While Coauthor’s fact checking doesn’t reduce the risk of sharing incorrect information to zero, it greatly reduces the chance of making inadvertent errors that could harm your professional image.

Coauthor uses a multi-step fact checking process to ensure your posts contain accurate information:

  1. Claim identification: We automatically identify distinct, verifiable claims within each post.
  2. Parallel research: Coauthor’s fact checking agent researches each claim using multiple publicly available online sources.
  3. Evidence evaluation: We assess how well-supported the claim is based on reliable, authoritative, and timely sources.
  4. Comprehensive assessment: Each claim receives a clear rating (well-supported, reasonable, mixed, etc.) based on available evidence.
  5. Transparent results: We provide you with detailed explanations and direct links to relevant sources.
  6. Suggested refinements: When applicable, we suggest straightforward edits to make your posts more accurate.

We use a nuanced rating system that reflects the complexity of information:

  • Well-supported: Strong evidence from multiple reliable sources directly supports the claim
  • Reasonable: Evidence generally supports the claim but may have minor gaps
  • Mixed: Significant evidence exists both supporting and contradicting the claim
  • Uncertain: Insufficient evidence exists to evaluate the claim confidently
  • Outdated: The claim’s evidence was valid at some point but is no longer current
  • Misleading: The claim contains partial truths but omits crucial context or exaggerates in a misleading way
  • Refuted: Strong evidence directly contradicts or debunks the claim

We focus on providing evidence and context rather than arbitrating what’s definitively “true.” You always remain in control of your message.

Yes. Each time you edit or refine your post, Coauthor automatically re-evaluates any updated claims.

Yes. For each fact-checked claim, you’ll see summaries of, and links to, the sources we consulted.

We encourage you to review the sources yourself—no AI-based fact-checking system is 100% accurate (yet). AI-based checks, while valuable, cannot fully replace your judgment or expertise.

Coauthor conducts fact checking automatically in the background as you finalize your posts. Our parallel processing approach means minimal impact on your workflow.

Our system prioritizes recent, authoritative, publicly available information to ensure accuracy, especially on rapidly evolving topics. Some websites may restrict AI access, but Coauthor always seeks out the most timely, reliable sources available.

The final say always stays with you. If you disagree with a claim assessment, you can simply disregard it after reviewing the provided sources.
